May is celebrated globally as Mental Health Awareness Month, a time dedicated to raising awareness about mental health issues and advocating for better mental health care. In the UK, Mental Health Awareness Week, spearheaded by the Mental Health Foundation, occurs annually in May as well.


This week-long event focuses on specific themes related to mental health and encourages people to engage in conversations, share experiences, and support each other.


One often overlooked factor in mental health is the impact of our environment. Both our external and internal environments play a significant role in our mental well-being. As an interior design company specializing in creating healing spaces, we understand the profound connection between our surroundings and our mental health.


 

The Environmental Impact on Mental Health


Research has consistently shown that our surroundings can influence our mood, stress levels, and overall mental health.


The World Health Organization (WHO) has highlighted that poor urban planning, including inadequate green spaces and high pollution levels, can negatively affect mental health . Conversely, access to natural light, green spaces, and well-designed interiors can enhance mental well-being.


External Environments


  1. Green Spaces: Access to parks and natural environments has been shown to reduce stress and improve mood. Studies indicate that spending time in nature can lower cortisol levels, which are associated with stress . Cities like Singapore have incorporated extensive green spaces within urban areas, promoting a connection with nature even in densely populated settings.

  2. Urban Design: The layout and infrastructure of our cities can either contribute to or alleviate mental health issues. Walkable neighborhoods with ample public spaces encourage social interaction and physical activity, both of which are beneficial for mental health. Copenhagen is an excellent example of a city that prioritizes pedestrian-friendly areas and bicycle paths, fostering a sense of community and well-being.


Internal Environments


  1. Natural Light: Adequate exposure to natural light is crucial for regulating our circadian rhythms, which affect sleep patterns and overall mood. Offices and homes designed with large windows and open spaces that maximize natural light can help improve mental health.


2. Biophilic Design: Incorporating elements of nature into interior spaces, such as plants, natural materials, and water features, can create a calming atmosphere. Biophilic design has been shown to reduce stress and enhance cognitive function.

These elements create a soothing environment for young patients and their families, contributing to better recovery experiences.


Tips for Designing Healing Spaces at Home


  1. Incorporate Plants: Indoor plants can improve air quality and add a touch of nature to your home, creating a more relaxing atmosphere.

  2. Use Natural Materials: Furniture and decor made from wood, stone, and other natural materials can create a sense of warmth and connection to nature.

  3. Optimise Natural Light: Arrange furniture to make the most of available natural light and consider using light colors on walls to reflect more light into the room.

  4. Create Quiet Zones: Designate areas in your home for relaxation and mindfulness practices, such as reading nooks or meditation spaces.

  5. Personalise Your Space: Surround yourself with items that bring you joy and comfort, such as photographs, artwork, and cherished mementos.


As we observe Mental Health Awareness Month and Week, it’s crucial to recognize the significant impact our environments have on our mental well-being. Thoughtful design, whether in public spaces or our own homes, can play a vital role in reducing stress, enhancing mood, and promoting overall mental health. By creating healing spaces, we not only improve our own lives but also contribute to a healthier, more supportive community.
