Keys to Creating a Healthy Sanctuary for You & Your Family

1. Declutter & Organise

This is a familiar topic, but one we often need reminders of. Clearing out the clutter from your home is a fundamental step in creating a space that promotes healing. My simple philosophy is this: if something doesn't make you feel good, serve a useful purpose, or hold sentimental value, then it's time to let it go. Organizing comes after decluttering. A neat and well-organized environment not only brings clarity but also reduces stress levels. Imagine coming home after a long day and seeing piles of books and scattered papers. Every time you notice them, you feel a pang of annoyance or frustration. It's a natural reaction that can negatively affect your mood and make you dislike certain areas of your home. If you experience this every day, it can significantly impact your overall happiness at home. So, to lift your spirits, start with the basics: release what you no longer need and tidy up your surroundings. It's a simple yet effective way to create a more welcoming and uplifting environment.

2. Natural Elements and Greenery

Biophilic design has made its mark in the world of interior design by encouraging the use of plants and nature-inspired elements in our indoor environments. It's been shown to lower stress levels, impacting our bodies by reducing cortisol levels and slowing down our heart rates, helping us to relax. This creates space in our minds for clearer thinking and sparks of creativity. NASA has identified certain plants that can effectively reduce air pollution, making them great additions to your home. Bring in natural elements like plants, flowers, wood, and stone. Not only do plants enhance air quality, but they also bring a sense of vitality and tranquility to your space. Choose plants that are low-maintenance and fit well with your décor. Incorporating wood and stone elements adds a grounding, earthy touch, connecting you more deeply to nature right in your own living area.

3. Natural Light and Fresh Air

Maximize natural light by keeping windows unobstructed and use sheer curtains or window dressings. Allow fresh air to circulate by opening windows regularly. Natural light and fresh air can improve your mood and energy levels, making your home feel inviting and revitalized.

4. Reduce Toxins

Are you thinking about giving your walls and ceilings a fresh coat of paint this year? It might be worth considering toxin-free options. Look for paints that are VOC reduced or VOC free, which most water-based paints qualify as. While it can be expensive to use these paints throughout your entire home, I suggest starting with the bedrooms. This way, you can ensure a good night's sleep without worrying about these chemicals affecting your system during one of the most restorative times of the day. Are you also in the market for a new bed mattress or sofa? It's important to know that formaldehyde is still used in the production of furniture, and these toxins can release into our homes over time. Consider investing in an organic mattress or a sofa made with natural materials and free of chemicals. I'll be sharing more insights on these topics in the coming months.

5. Incorporate Healing Practices

Do you have a small space you can dedicate to a mindful practice? I started with a single cupboard next to my bed which became a mini altar. This dedicated space acted as a focal point for me to get clear on the day I wished to create ahead. It worked wonders!!! This little space of peace and the insights it gave, is actually the inspiration behind my Home Retreat Room design service which you can book here. Such space could be used for introducing self-reflection or self-healing practices into your home, including yoga, meditation, or aromatherapy. Create a designated space for these practices, complete with calming elements like a Himalayan salt lamp, cotton or natural cushions and soothing scents - your own little sanctuary.

6. Sound and Music

Consider incorporating soothing sounds or music into your home environment - maybe a crystal sound bowl or simply play relaxing music, nature sounds, or guided meditations to enhance and imbue a calming atmosphere. Invest in a good sound system to ensure high-quality sound. There are frequencies said to help heal the mind and body - Solfeggio frequencies being one of them. Take the time to create a Solfeggio frequency play list.

7. Energy Clearing and Cleansing

Regularly clear the energy in your home to maintain a positive and healing environment. Consider practices like smudging with sage, lighting candles, or using essential oils to cleanse the energy and refresh your space.
