Why Removing Toxins from Our Homes is Essential for Health and Wellbeing

Welcome, to an exploration into the vital importance of detoxifying our dwellings – not merely as a matter of aesthetics, but as a profound step towards safeguarding our health, wellbeing, and the planet. I'm deeply passionate about cultivating environments that promote healing and conscious living.

Our homes, I have come to see, are more than just shelters; they are extensions of our beings, shaping our experiences and influencing our overall quality of life. This perspective was crystallised during my years at university. There was something about the nature and concept of 'space' that captivated me beyond my understanding. This has been the core of my relationship to spaces and places, an urge to gain insight about what lies hidden, what do these spaces mean to us and with so many built environments that have negative impacts upon the human psyche and health, uncover what creates optimal spaces for both humans and the world around us. One of these topics of discovery has been toxins.

In recent years, scientific research has shed light on the presence of toxins in our homes and their potential impact on human health and wellbeing. Common household items such as furniture, paints, and cleaning products often contain chemicals known to be harmful to human health. Let's take a look at some of these toxins and their effects:

Non-Toxic Paints: Using non-VOC and low-VOC paints can help improve indoor air quality and reduce health risks associated with paint fumes. These paints release fewer harmful chemicals into the air, mitigating respiratory issues and other health concerns. Furthermore, they come in a variety of colors and finishes, providing aesthetic appeal without compromising on safety.

The following brands produce low or VOC free paints.

  1. Earthborn

  2. Ecos Paints

  3. Little Greene

  4. Auro

  5. Farrow & Ball

  6. Graphenstone

  7. Lakeland Paints

  8. Biofa

  9. Keim Mineral Paints

  10. Edward Bulmer Natural Paint

Formaldehyde: Formaldehyde is a prevalent indoor air pollutant found in many household products, including furniture, flooring, and building materials. Research published in the International Journal of Hygiene and Environmental Health has linked formaldehyde exposure to respiratory issues such as asthma and allergies. Additionally, formaldehyde exposure has been associated with symptoms such as headaches, dizziness, and irritation of the eyes, nose, and throat.

Phthalates: Phthalates are commonly found in plastics, vinyl flooring, and personal care products. Research conducted by the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences suggests that exposure to phthalates may disrupt hormone function, leading to reproductive issues, developmental abnormalities, and adverse effects on the nervous system.

Perfluorinated Chemicals (PFCs): Perfluorinated chemicals are present in non-stick cookware, stain-resistant fabrics, and food packaging. Studies published in the Journal of Environmental Science and Technology indicate that exposure to PFCs may impair immune function, disrupt hormone regulation, and contribute to adverse birth outcomes.

Natural Materials: Selecting natural materials such as wool carpets over synthetic ones can significantly reduce exposure to toxins. Wool carpets are naturally resistant to dust mites and bacteria, providing a healthier indoor environment. Additionally, choosing organic cotton upholstery and bamboo furniture can further minimize exposure to harmful chemicals.

Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs): VOCs are emitted as gases from various household products such as paints, cleaning agents, and air fresheners. Studies published in the Journal of Environmental Health Perspectives have shown that long-term exposure to VOCs is linked to an increased risk of respiratory diseases, neurological effects, and certain types of cancer.

Eco-Friendly Flooring Glues: Opting for non-toxic flooring glues such as Auro 380 Natural Resin Glue can ensure a safe and secure installation process. These glues are free from harmful chemicals, minimizing indoor air pollution and promoting a healthier living environment.

Green Cleaning Products: Switching to eco-friendly household cleaners made from plant-based ingredients can further reduce exposure to toxins. These cleaners are effective at removing dirt and grime without introducing harmful chemicals into the home. Moreover, they are biodegradable and environmentally sustainable, contributing to a healthier planet.

Detoxifying our dwellings by removing toxins and opting for safer alternatives is essential for protecting our health and wellbeing. By making informed choices and prioritizing safer materials and products, we can create homes that promote a healthier lifestyle for ourselves and future generations.
